In addition to all the great events and activities on the farm, a visit to the Bates Nut Store is an amazing treat unto itself. There you’ll find, holiday gifts, gift packs, gift baskets, unique Halloween and Christmas supplies, and a huge assortment of dried fruit, glazed fruit, raw, roasted and salted nuts, chocolates, sugar free candy, snacks and so much more!
Pumpkins date back 5,000 years to our Native Americans who used the fruit for food and medicine. Early American settlers actually came up with a sort of pumpkin pie by removing all the seeds, and adding milk, honey and spices then baking it over a low hot fire.
People from all over the world grow and compete in the harvesting of Giant Pumpkins. A man by the name of Bruce Whitter from New Hampshire, grew one of the largest weighing 1,458 pounds. The Annual Pumpkin Festival in Port Elgin Canada attracts more than 50,000 visitors that watch growers compete in the world’s title for largest vegetables/fruits grown.
