Near the north jetty at Oceanside Harbor and at Buccaneer Beach, three malnourished sea lion pups were rescued Sunday by the Oceanside Police Harbor Patrol. They were recovered from rocks near the Pier about 9:20 a.m., and taken to Sea World for rehabilitation.
This time of year, it’s common that the seal mothers and pups separate, which leads to the sea lion pups searching for food and being unable to find any, so they venture up onto the rocks. Two of them could not find their way.
Oceanside Police Sgt. Ignacio Lopez stated that lifeguards and Harbor Patrol were called in to scoop up the pups and take them to the Oceanside Pier lifeguard headquarters, where a Sea World crew was contacted to pick them up.
According to lifeguards, food for all marine animals is scarce this time of year, and the frequency of malnourished sea animals are turning up more often along the county beaches.
